Last Sunday my brother and I also visited the Georgian House. It is within walking distance of the Red Lodge and my brother is studying the Georgians at school so it seemed silly not to go! The house was built for John Pinney, a sugar merchant, and was designed by Robert Adam.
On the ground floor of the house are a study and two dining rooms which could be partitioned off or opened out for entertaining guests. They have been set out with furniture and replica foods as if people are just about to sit down to eat.
I liked the little tea caddy on the breakfast table.
There were beautiful chandeliers hung over the tables.
On the way down to the basement was the pantry, where all the china, glasses, silverware and so on would have been kept. There was some beautiful china on display.
In the basement there is a plunge pool, which would have been filled with cold water so Mr Pinney could have a refreshing dip. Plunging yourself in cold water used to be considered beneficial to one's health...I think it just sounds like a recipe for pneumonia, especially in the days before central heating!
The kitchen was filled with kettles, jelly and butter moulds, and all sorts of interesting looking brass objects. I could just imagine it in use, with a roaring fire and people bustling about.
The next room was the laundry, which was equipped with stoves to boil the water for washing the clothes.
There were lots of mangles and other contraptions for scrubbing the clothes and squeezing the water out of them. They all looked very labour intensive, I am glad we have washing machines now.
Upstairs there was a large parlour, with a huge woven rug and heavy drapes at the window.
The bedroom had a four poster bed with frilly drapes and a pretty cradle at the foot of the bed. The bedroom was quite spacious and light, it seemed like a pleasant room to sleep in.
There was also a little dressing table. In this picture you can see the shutters on the windows.
The final upstairs room had a wonderful view across the city, the sky looked beautiful!
I enjoyed visiting the Georgian House, although I did find the Red Lodge more interesting. I think that is just because I am more used to Georgian architecture though, I've spent a lot of time in Bath so have seen lots of it. I would still recommend visiting the Georgian house, it is very attractive and for people less familiar with the interiors of Georgian houses I think it would be really informative, especially the kitchen and laundry areas. The Georgian House has free entry, and you can find out more here.

This looks great, I would love to sleep in that bed. Another reason why I need to visit Bristol!
ReplyDeleteIt did look extremely comfortable. If you visit Bristol let me know and we can do a meet up, I would be more than happy to give you a little tour of the city!
